Breast Augmentation
Purpose of Procedure
This operation entails insertion of a saline or silicone implant into the breast. This will enlarge the breasts and improve the shape. Sometimes this results in the nipple areolar complex (NAC) appearing to have moved upwards which gives the breast a more youthful and perky look. All human beings have different breasts one person compared to another which largely explains why results will vary from patient to patient.
Brief Description of the Procedure
This surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. All surgery is done at Dr. Payne's MediCare and California state certified Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center located within his office.
Incision options include placement beneath the NAC (periareolar), at the bottom of the breast (IMC=inframmary incision), in the armpit (trans-axillary), or through the belly button (TUBA=trans-umbilical breast augmentation).
The patient may choose a saline implant or a silicone implant. These implants have either smooth or textured outer shells and come in a variety of sizes and shapes including round implants versus shaped implants.
The breast implant may be placed under the breast (subglandular) or under the muscle (partial subpectoral) depending on individual patient anatomy and preference.
The final choices regarding incisions, implant location within the breast, type and size of the implants to be used will be determined for each patient as a result of an extensive conversation with Dr. Payne prior to surgery.
Additionally, each patient’s results are customized to fit their particular set of circumstances in the operating room on the day of surgery. Dr. Payne will discuss this with you in great detail prior to surgery.
LIKELY OUTCOME AND LONGEVITY: The great majority of patients who undergo a breast augmentation operation are very pleased with their results. This is one of the most popular procedures in the field of plastic surgery and has the power to really transform breast and body appearance. Most women have bigger lower bodies and more petite upper bodies. After this surgery women tend to find that they have a better balance between the upper and lower halves. Breast augmentation can make nearby areas such as the tummy look better. This results in a better overall figure. It facilitates the wearing of a greater variety of clothing and makes women look and feel sexier. It conveys the image of youth and fitness. It bolsters self-confidence and increases self-esteem.
Most surgical procedures in plastic surgery are not permanent and neither is breast augmentation. The implants will not last a lifetime. They will require replacement periodically. Breasts will continue to show the effects of aging, gravity, lifestyle issues, and weight changes with the passage of time. It will sometimes be necessary to perform additional breast surgery as women age. Common surgery performed down the road after the initial breast augmentation includes breast lifts, implant exchange to a different size or type of implant, treatment for implant leakage or rupture, correction of capsular contracture and other issues. The need for this type of extra treatment will vary from one person to the next. Dr. Payne will give you a detailed analysis of what he thinks about your anatomy and what the likely future holds for you.
Recovery Issues
Most patients will need a week off work after this surgery. The recovery process is generally quite rapid. Patients who like to exercise can usually resume some type of workout within a week of surgery and can be doing strenuous exercise within 3–4 weeks. Dr. Payne will provide each patient with a detailed set of postoperative instructions as well as several medications aimed at minimizing discomfort after the surgery. He will discuss each patient’s needs in detail so that they can make plans appropriate to their individual circumstances. All patients are followed closely until they are well healed and back to normal.
